Title I, Part C - Education of Migratory Children

This program establishes or improves programs of education, including support services, for migratory children and their families.

PROGRAM INFORMATION

The New York State Migrant Education Program (NYS-MEP) seeks to establish or improve programs of education, including support services, for migratory children and their families.Ìý The overarching purpose of the MEP is to ensure that children of migrant workers have access to and benefit from the same free, appropriate public education, including public preschool education, provided to other children.Ìý To achieve this purpose, MEP funds help state and local educational agencies remove barriers to the school enrollment, attendance, and achievement of migrant children.

DEFINITION OF "MIGRATORY CHILD"

A migratory child is one whose family move across the country seeking seasonal or temporary work in the agricultural, dairy, or fishery industry.Ìý The migratory child experiences constant mobility and academic interruption, social and cultural isolation, and poor health and poverty, which contribute to his or her lower academic achievement.
